A Top Horror Writing Blog...that's the Biting-Edge!

Image
Mario here, We at Biting-Edge are all aglow like Jack O' Lanterns because Online Masters Degree Programs presented us an award for being one of their Top Horror Writing Blogs . Drool with envy over our nifty red badge. Masters Degree O ne of our fellow recipients is the blog Living in the Snark Cage hosted by Lady Euthenasia. This last Saturday, Jeanne and I had the pleasure of presenting with Stephen Graham Jones, Betsy Dornbusch, Ed Hickok, Thia Myles Vincent, Dave Jackson, and E.C. Stacy at the Englewood Library Meet Up Halloween Extravaganza . Much thanks to Mike Hance for orchestrating this. Fellow mystery writer Terry Wright is pushing pedal to the metal for his short stories available on-line as downloads for Kindle, Nook, or straight to your computer. His latest is Night Stalker from New Line Press . Only $1.99. Terry not only wrote a great story, he also did the cover art! What's really got our fangs a-twitching is news that Biting-Edge favorite Sig

Happy Mad Halloween Lib

Hey, people! I'm Sonya, and I'm new around here. I promise I'll be hazed - er, officially introduced soon. But I just couldn't wait to share something fun. At least, I think it's fun. Your definition of fun might be different. Perhaps you enjoy pulling the wings off flies, or watching sensational daytime television talk shows. You sick, sick person. Anyway! Writers are always trying something new, right? So yesterday I wrote my first ever Mad Lib. And it was fun! Now I'm contemplating a career in Mad Lib writing. I hear there's a huge market for them in Hibbert's Gore, Maine (population: 1). I'll hit the bestseller list for sure. I even uploaded my creation to a site where EVERYONE (in Hibbert's Gore) can play! Just for you! So if you click here and fill in the blanks , don't say I didn't warn you. Here's my filled-out version, randomly generated because I already knew what it said and I didn't want to cheat. Well, actually, I did

A Void City Halloween - Part 3

Out in the dark, a trio of killers celebrate Halloween in the vampire tradition. To them, Trick or Treating involves naming costumes, refereeing valid targets, and verifying kills. The vampires in my Void City books do not sparkle, and Eric is anything but a classic hero. Nevertheless, he might just rise to the occasion in this fun short story ... You'll have to read to find out, but don't start here. In the spirit of trick or treating and going from house to house for candy, I've decided (on the spur of the moment, really) to serialize a Halloween tale, posting different sections (as I write them) on various blogs. How many parts will there be? I have no idea, but I do promise this: The story will be done and all the sections posted by Halloween Night. Part 1 can be found over at Paranormal Haven (along with a contest that runs through 10/27/2010 at 11:59 pm cst) Part 2 is located at Pocket After Dark (where you can also read STAKED, the first Void

Mile Hi Con behind us, up ahead...Halloween with wine!

Image
Mario here, Another Mile Hi Con bites the dust. You mix writers, geeks, booze, and costumes, you're bound to end up with all sorts of nuttiness. This con didn't disappoint. <----Costumer-extraordinaire Neffra had to show off her Klingon cleavage. Ilana and Janene continued to strut their stuff after the costume contest.---> As expected, Jeanne and Betsy Dornbusch got a jump start on the mayhem by fueling up at the bar and plotting against you-know-who. Cons are a great time to reunite with writer friends. Warren Hammond (L), Carrie Vaughn, and Paolo Bacigalupi (R). We had much to celebrate with the recent success of Bacigalupi, winner of a Hugo and a Nebula for The Windup Girl , and as a Finalist for a National Book Award for Ship Breaker . Jeanne represented the Biting-Edge on the Vampires, Werewolves, Mermaids: Next in Urban Fantasy panel with Author Guest of Honor Rachel Caine (L), and Stephen Graham Jones (R). Eve

Cover and Title Change for the Naked Werewolf Books

Image
The title and cover for the werewolf romance being released in March has changed to HOW TO SEDUCE A NAKED WEREWOLF. This is the new cover. Isn't it cute? To pre-order, click here It will be a bit confusing as the old title is still listed on the Amazon page. Also, previous pre-orders still count. There will be two more announcements this week, which will be increasing in "hugeness." Stay tuned!

NEW LEAGUER ALERT! INTRODUCING . . . KEVIN HEARNE!

Image
Hello Leaguers! So, when we decided to invite new people to join the League, I was all, “Whatever, yeah.” Then everyone was like, “Surprise, surprise, look who has no one to invite, Miss Never Leave the House.” And I was all, “Dude, I left the house like twice this week, and it was AWESOME.” To prove I leave the house, and have many, many friends, I fired up my Twitter feed and pointed to find one lucky winner…. Unfortunately, it was a porn spam-bot, that replied with an automated message. So I fired up the magic finger again, and this time I landed on Anne Rice! Who immediately blocked me. But Kevin Hearne got fingered last, and this one said yes. So,YAY, KEVIN! WELCOME TO THE LEAGUE OF RELUCTANT ADULTS! I told Kevin to send me some pictures, so that I could blog his introduction, a sort of "This is Your Life...in Snark!" In return, I sent him some saucy pics I’d taken with a Polaroid and a polish sausage. Who knew restraining orders could get issued so fast? When Kevin was

Welcome Sonya, Kevin and Kari!

Occasionally, we Leaguers reach out into the darkness and dig out some chewy nuggets for you. Um...wait. That sounded like something...oh well, let's just go with it. This time, through our wildly philanthropic ways, we're plucking Sonya Bateman (MASTER OF NONE), Kevin Hearne (HOUNDED and K. A. (Kari) Stewart (DEVIL IN THE DETAILS) from the lonely wilds of the internets and wrapping them in our special blankets of love (and yes, we've washed them since Anton rolled in them after the petting farm incident). So Join us in welcoming NEW LEAGUERS! All this week, we'll be posting welcome posts that may or may not be cruel and hazing. It's hard to say. Until then, step up and say hello you freakin' lurkers!

Hard-boiled and Fantastic, three of our favorites, with an angel

Mario here: It's fitting that in this time of magical make-believe and scariness that we announce that Biting-Edge ex-pat Marta Acosta ties up her Casa Dracula series with her newest book, Haunted Honeymoon . Booklist calls this story, "A satisfying wrap-up to a snappy supernatural series." Drop by VampireWire and tell Marta that the Biting-Edge sent you. Also, Carolyn Crane, one of our buddies from the League of Reluctant Adults, has a giveaway on the Borders True Romance blog. Answer a simple multiple-choice test and you too could win a set of the Justine Jones urban fantasy novels, Mind Games and Double Cross . The supernatural is more than vampires, demons, and monsters. We also have the occasional angel. But having wings may not be all you expect it to be. As shown here: This Tuesday, I'll be teaching another workshop at the Denver Public Library Fresh City Life series: Boo! Scary Stories that Really Scare And moving outside the orbit of urban fantasy and
